The 2007 World Social Forum in Nairobi is now over, but what a thrill, what an opportunity to meet and witness the world civil society in action, the union of many communities from all parts of the globe around one main theme: Another world is possible. Let’s unite and build it all together!
Off course, all the organizations there have their particular opinion on the kind of world they want or/and the aspect they choose to focus on. But all in all, it is the idea(l) of a fair world, of a human world, of a world full of social justice and care for human beings, of a world sharing its riches, of a world where people stop fighting and stop killing each other, of a world full of smiles and happiness , of a world where freedom reigns and where the people have the power.
Debates on the global current issue of water, on the issue of a possible world parliament, on the issues of particular nations or communities (the holding of free elections in RDC Congo, the recognition of Palestine and Israel, of African tribes just trying to survive), on the issue of a possible socialist revolution for the 21th century, on the issue of fundamentalism, on the issue of neoliberalism, on the issue of the youth having to take power in their own hands and change this world, on the issue of torture, of human rights, of female representation in politics, on the philosophical issue of what it means to be human, etc..
The list is endless and so are the teachings from this Forum, a true platform for anybody to come and expose their ideas, their goals, their projects, their actions, their dreams, their utopia, a sight where nobody has the power but the people. Authentic and innovative style of social organization.
While it was going on, not much, the media didn’t broadcast many images, only a few personalities made the effort to come (like Shirin Ebadi for instance, the Iranian female Peace Nobel Prize), they all focused on Davos, which in a way is understandable, because this is still where the influential people and the power resides. For now.
As for the people present there, Africans, NGOs, and individuals from all around our beautiful planet, new ideas, new hope, consciousness of the presence, the power, the birth and growth of a real global village of men and women fighting for their right and the right of every single human being to live a decent life.
And as for the years to come, a world social forum in every city next year, so that everybody can join, and a new unique forum in 2009 in a city still to be determined.
The spirit of the Forum lives on, and this is only the beginning…
We met with the founding father of the World Social Forum, the brazilian Oded Grajew, and this is what he told us:
Change is possible. We have to try. I tried and it worked. The World Social Forum now takes place every year since 2001. We have to try, all together with our diversity, it is urgent! In the future, when our kids and grand kids will ask us why we didn’t try when we knew, what are we going to tell them?
We’ll tell them that we were there, that we tried, that we refused to let History repeat itself once again, and that in the end, the worldwide civil society raised its voice as one, stood up for its realistic ideals, showed to the world how we could make this planet a better place to live in, and influenced the global powers to build a fair and human world for Humanity and forever.
We’ll tell them that the world wasn’t always that nice and that they should be thankful for the world they now live in and that they must continue in that same direction to reach, in the end, who knows, maybe a Heaven on Earth.
